Community Profile

This comm is a place for all of us with disabilities and disabling conditions. We may be people with physical disabilities, psychiatric disabilities, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, sensory impairments or chronic illness. We may be people with multiple disabilities.

Some of us identify ourselves as disabled and some of us don't. Some of us identify as chronically ill. Some of us identify as mentally ill. Some of us identify ourselves as Deaf. Some of us identify ourselves as neurodiverse.

Some of us are persons without disabilities and are our friends, family, supporters or allies.

Some of us have to fight to get society to recognize our impairments, and some of us have to fight to get society to stop focussing on our impairments long enough to see our abilities.

This comm is for all of us. It's a space for us to discuss our lives and disability in general. It's a place for information, support and activism, and it's a place for anything and everything relating to disability. Welcome!

Some guidelines for a safe and accessible community

Accessibility

Remember that some comm members may have difficulty accessing unusually formatted posts. Specifically,

1. Please try to keep your formatting as close as possible to Dreamwidth's default formatting. That way, other members can apply their own preferred style when they access it. In particular, please try not to change the color, type, or size of your font. If you can, avoid using all capital letters.

2. If your post is particularly long, please try to put most of it behind a cut. (From the Dreamwidth FAQ on cuts: "To make a cut with the HTML Editor, type <cut> before the text you want to hide under a cut, then </cut> when you want your text to appear on the page as normal. You can add text to the cut text link by entering <cut text="your text here">. If you're using the Rich Text Editor, highlight the text you want to appear behind a cut then click the "Cut" button. A pop-up box will appear so you can add your own text to the cut text link.")

Safety

The comm is a place for us to talk about our lives. Friendly discussion and polite disagreement are welcome – flames, trolling, and personal attacks are not.

This community is envisioned both as safe space and common ground for those of us living with disability, neurodiversity, or other non-mainstream abilisms. Please respect the life experiences of others when they diverge from yours. In particular, please respect everyone's self-identifications as a person with(out) a disability and proactively avoid marginalizing language of any type when addressing others. This community will be moderated as necessary to keep discussions on topic and to maintain a safe space.
